Time Killing at a giant crow roadside stop

Killing Time Playlist

Killing time on a road trip all begins with an Epic Road Trip playlist. With two generations of music lovers in one vehicle it can be tricky making a successful playlist that everyone will enjoy. Fortunately I am an amazing parent and exposed my kids to all kinds of music from all decades.

We listen to everyone and everything from Doris Day to NWA. Almost every genre is represented…oldies, rock, heavy metal, musicals, pop, gangster rap, big band and even some current stuff. Occasionally we listen to Disneyland ride soundtracks…it’s a thing I swear!  I let my girls build the list. The current stuff is awful so I can only take a little at a time!

My oldest daughter, we call her Peanut, is the funniest person I know. She knows the words to every song. She is a back seat, road trip rock star. Her one woman show entertains us for hours! She is so over-the-top she has brought me to tears with laughter, while keeping my eyes on the road at all times:)

Time on the Road Games

Trivia is another way we entertain ourselves. Specifically, movie and music trivia. Not to toot my own horn,  I need to repeat that I am an awesome parent, my kids have been exposed to the best classic and quotable movies. We quote movie lines multiple times throughout the day. It comes out naturally as part of the conversation, and no one really even bats an eye!

My middle daughter, whom we call Loop, is a cinematic arts major and watches artsy movies. I can’t watch those… too boring. Needless to say she usually kicks everyone’s butt in movie trivia. However, we are equal in music trivia. Trivia is also a great camping game!

Stopping Also Helps Pass the TIme

We stop, A LOT. I would love to say its all necessary gas stops but that is not the case. I do have to get gas about every 350 miles when I’m towing. The real culprit is me. I have a major Starbucks iced tea problem which creates a major pee stop problem! Good thing I have a bathroom on wheels.

I also have a fascination with odd roadside stops. It drives my kids crazy but they are good sports and participate in the photo taking.

There was the Statue of Liber-tree, a water tower painted like a UFO, Cadillac Ranch, and a number of really large animal statues across the states! I have been know to take a side route 10 miles plus to see this stuff.

Abs, my youngest, is usually the best sport. She’ll get out most of the time even when her sisters wont! Of course these stops make the driving longer but are well worth it I think!

Talking. Sleeping, Laughing and Singing are the Best Ways to Kill Time

I try to make daily recordings of our adventures, It is a really fun way to create wonderful memories!

While the kids sleep or have their headphones on, I talk to myself (it is a fascinating conversation),  listen to books or podcasts.

We do many things while we are on the road, but my favorite is just talking and laughing with my girls.

Our road trips will be lovingly remembered by all of us forever. As they get older and have less time to go places for long periods of time, I am grateful for all the good times we’ve had out on the road. I can’t get the time back so I have to take advantage of it when I can!
